Auto and home insurance FAQ

Is it cheaper to bundle auto and home insurance?

Often, yes. Many insurers give a multi-policy discount when the same company writes your car and your home, but the bundle is not always the lowest total. Compare the combined price with the best separate policies before you decide.

What auto insurance does my state require?

Every state on this site requires liability coverage at minimum limits, and some add personal injury protection or uninsured motorist coverage. Our state minimums guide lists each requirement.

Does homeowners insurance cover my car?

No. Damage to your vehicle belongs under the auto policy's collision or comprehensive coverage, even when the car is parked in your garage. Personal belongings stolen from a car are usually covered by homeowners insurance, subject to the deductible.

What is full coverage auto insurance?

It is an informal term for liability plus collision and comprehensive. Lenders and leasing companies usually require it on financed vehicles.

How much liability should I carry?

Enough to protect what you own and your future earnings. Many households choose limits well above state minimums and add an umbrella policy that sits over both auto and home.

Will one claim raise both policies?

It can. Some insurers look at your overall claims history when pricing a bundle. Ask how a claim on one policy affects the other.

Can I bundle if I rent?

Yes. Renters insurance can usually be combined with auto in the same way, though this site focuses on homeowners and auto.

Is a quote the same as coverage?

No. A quote is not a binder. Coverage starts only when the insurer binds the policy and confirms it in writing.

Do I have to buy both policies on the same day?

No. You can usually add the second policy later, and the discount applies once both are in force.

Can I bundle with a condo or renters policy?

Usually, yes. Most multi-policy discounts apply to any combination of auto with a home, condo, or renters policy.

What happens to the discount if I cancel one policy?

The discount typically ends, and the remaining policy is re-priced at its standalone rate.

What does 25/50/25 mean?

$25,000 bodily injury per person, $50,000 bodily injury per accident, and $25,000 property damage per accident.

Is the minimum enough?

For most households it is not. Medical bills and vehicle repair costs can exceed minimum limits quickly, leaving you personally responsible for the rest.

Do I need uninsured motorist coverage?

It is required in some states and offered in others, often with a written rejection required to decline it. It protects you when the at-fault driver lacks enough insurance.

When can I drop collision and comprehensive?

Once the car is paid off and its value is low compared with the annual cost of the coverage plus your deductible, dropping them may make sense.

Does full coverage include rental cars?

Not automatically. Rental reimbursement is an add-on.

What is gap insurance?

It pays the difference between what you owe on a loan or lease and the car's actual cash value if it is totaled.

Should my dwelling limit equal my home's market value?

No. It should reflect rebuild cost, which excludes land and can be higher or lower than market value.

What is replacement cost?

Coverage that pays to repair or replace without deducting for depreciation, as opposed to actual cash value.

Is water damage covered?

Sudden, accidental water damage such as a burst pipe usually is. Flood, gradual leaks, and sewer backup usually are not unless added.

How much umbrella coverage do I need?

Many households start at $1 million. Consider your assets, income, and risks such as teen drivers, pools, or rental properties.

Does an umbrella cover my own injuries?

No. It covers liability to others.

Do I need my auto and home with the same insurer?

Not always, but many insurers prefer or require it.

Does raising my deductible always save money?

It usually lowers premium, but make sure you can afford the higher amount after a claim.

Do safety devices help?

Monitored alarms, water leak sensors, and automatic shutoff valves can earn home discounts with many insurers.

Should I file small claims?

Small claims can affect future pricing. Weigh the payment against the potential long-term cost.
